WBJEE result to be announced soon: Check it now!!

The publication of the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination Board (WBJEE) results is now set to proceed after the Supreme Court, on July 28, stayed the Calcutta High Court’s earlier order that had halted the implementation of the state government’s revised list of Other Backward Classes (OBCs), a senior official from the higher education department said on Wednesday.

State Education Minister Bratya Basu stated that the higher education department had anticipated the development and was fully prepared to act swiftly. “We had already anticipated this and are ready to take immediate action,” he said following the Supreme Court’s order.

When asked about the timeline for the release of WBJEE results, Board Chairperson Sonali Chakraborty Banerjee remained cautiously optimistic.

“We received the state government’s directive today (July 30). We will implement it and announce our decision tomorrow (July 31),” she told PTI.

A senior education department official confirmed that preparations were underway for the results’ release.

“We’ve consulted legal experts and taken all necessary steps to safeguard the interests of the candidates. The results will be declared soon,” the official said.

Earlier, Banerjee had explained that the board was ready to release the results by July 5. “But due to the ensuing legal developments, the matter became subjudice, and we had to wait for the government’s directive,” she noted.

The WBJEE examination was conducted on April 27.

On July 28, the Supreme Court bench comprising Chief Justice BR Gavai and Justices K Vinod Chandran and NV Anjaria overturned the Calcutta High Court’s stay on the implementation of the state’s revised OBC list, observing that “prima facie, the high court order seems to be erroneous.”

Previously, on June 17, the Calcutta High Court had issued an interim stay on the state government’s notifications granting OBC status to 140 subsections under the OBC-A and OBC-B categories.

The Supreme Court took note of arguments presented by senior advocate Kapil Sibal on behalf of the state and remarked, “It is surprising. How can the high court pass such an order? Reservation falls under the purview of the executive.”

The revised OBC list had been prepared by the state government after the High Court, in May 2024, struck down the inclusion of 77 communities in the earlier OBC list.
